CampingThe K2 Gondogoro La Trek is widely regarded as the finest trekking expedition in Pakistan and one of the greatest mountain adventures on Earth. Combining the legendary journey to K2 Base Camp with the spectacular crossing of Gondogoro La Pass (5,585m), this trek offers an unforgettable traverse through the heart of the Karakoram. Along the way, trekkers witness towering granite spires, massive glaciers, pristine alpine valleys, and four of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks.
Unlike the classic K2 Base Camp Trek, the Gondogoro La route forms a complete circuit rather than returning along the Baltoro Glacier. After visiting Concordia and K2 Base Camp, the expedition continues to Ali Camp before crossing the breathtaking Gondogoro La Pass at sunrise. The descent into the beautiful Hushe Valley rewards trekkers with entirely new landscapes, making this route the most diverse and scenic trekking experience in Pakistan.
The journey passes beneath many of the world's most famous mountains including K2 (8,611m), Broad Peak (8,051m), Gasherbrum I (8,080m), Gasherbrum II (8,035m), Masherbrum (7,821m), Muztagh Tower, Mitre Peak, Chogolisa, and the legendary Trango Towers. Standing at Concordia—often called the "Throne Room of the Mountain Gods"—is considered one of the greatest moments in world trekking.
Our experienced local team has been organizing expeditions across Baltoro Glacier and Gondogoro La for many years. Being native to Baltistan allows us to provide unmatched local knowledge, experienced guides, professional climbing support, highly trained high-altitude porters, and exceptional logistical services. Safety, sustainability, and personalized service remain our highest priorities throughout every expedition.
Our all-inclusive packages include airport transfers, domestic flights (where applicable), hotels, camping equipment, professional guides, licensed climbing support for Gondogoro La, permits, porters, meals during trekking, transportation, and complete expedition logistics. We operate more than a dozen guaranteed departures every summer while also arranging fully customized private expeditions for individuals, families, clubs, universities, and international groups.

For many experienced trekkers, reaching K2 Base Camp is the ultimate goal. Crossing Gondogoro La elevates the experience even further. Instead of retracing your footsteps along Baltoro Glacier, the expedition continues across one of the highest non-technical trekking passes in the Karakoram before descending into Hushe Valley. This creates an incredible circular journey with constantly changing scenery and far greater mountain diversity.
The sunrise ascent of Gondogoro La is one of the greatest highlights of the expedition. From the summit, climbers enjoy panoramic views of K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums, Chogolisa, Masherbrum, Laila Peak, and hundreds of surrounding peaks stretching across the Karakoram. Few mountain viewpoints anywhere in the world rival this extraordinary panorama.
Although physically demanding, the trek requires no previous mountaineering experience. Fixed ropes are installed on the steeper sections of Gondogoro La, and every group is accompanied by experienced local guides and climbing assistants who ensure a safe crossing under suitable weather conditions.

Previous trekking experience is highly recommended, although technical climbing skills are not necessary. Participants should be comfortable walking for several consecutive days across glacier terrain while carrying a small daypack.

Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, our staff will pick you up and transfer you to a partner hotel near Margalla Hills. After rest and relaxation, you will complete necessary formalities. Late arrivals will handle payment and briefing upon arrival at Skardu.
Early morning flight from Islamabad to Skardu provides spectacular views of the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges, including glimpses of Nanga Parbat. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel in Skardu (the logistic hub for Karakoram expeditions). If time permits, explore the local bazaar and city outskirts.
Begin acclimatization with a hike to Kharpocho Fort and the old castle. The fort offers breathtaking views of the Indus River and surrounding mountains. Afternoon free for shopping or equipment checks. Note: Crampons are essential for crossing Gondogoro Pass and can be arranged in Skardu.
A 5-7 hour jeep drive from Skardu through Shigar Valley (hosting the second-highest peak on Earth). The scenic route follows the Shigar River and Braldu River through lush green fields and narrowing mountain passes. Askoli is the last village before the K2 Gondogoro La Trek. Porters join the expedition from Askoli or Paju Camp.
Trek begins with a two-hour walk to Korofon Camp at the junction of Biafo Glacier and Baltoro River. Continue towards Mongron Camp with views of Bakhordas Peak (the first peak visible on the Baltoro trek).
A challenging yet rewarding trek through stunning Karakoram landscapes. Awe-inspiring mountain vistas accompany the journey as trekkers ascend through varied terrain with magnificent scenery on all sides.
Rest day dedicated to acclimatization. Recover from the previous days' trekking and prepare for the demanding Baltoro Glacier section ahead.
Begin trekking on the famous 65km Baltoro Glacier, which continues to Concordia where it merges with Godwin Austin Glacier. After 30 minutes from Paju Camp, reach the snout of Baltoro Glacier where you can see Trango Towers, Uli Biaho, and Paju Peak. Four to five hours of trekking leads to Liligo for lunch with views of Trango Towers. Continue along the right edge of Baltoro Glacier to Khoburse Camp for overnight stay.
Trek over rough terrain of Baltoro Glacier. Urdukas is the last camp before higher glacial camps and the shortest walking day on Baltoro Glacier. Located above the glacier, it provides spectacular views of granite spires including Trango, Uli Biaho, and Cathedral peaks. This is the second most scenic camp after Concordia. Clear weather may reveal Gasherbrum 4.
Trek through the middle of Baltoro Glacier over rough moraines. Masherbrum Peak is visible on the right, Muztagh on the left. This day offers the first distant sight of Gasherbrum peaks and Broad Peak. After 3-4 hours reach Goro 1 for lunch. Resume trek for another 3-4 hours to Goro 2, located at the junction of Baltoro and Younghusband Glaciers. Goro 2 is windy and cold (first camping on the glacier proper) but offers mesmerizing views of surrounding peaks.
A very special day with panoramic scenery of spectacular mountains. Concordia, known as the "Throne Room of the Mountain Gods," is one of the best campsites on the planet. It is the junction of Baltoro, Godwin Austin, Gasherbrum, and Vigne Glaciers. After 5-6 hours of trekking from Goro 2, reach Concordia. The site is surrounded by giant peaks including K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum III, Mitre Peak, Baltoro Kangri, Sia Kangri, and Chogolisa. Very few people experience this wilderness. The camp is cold and snow often falls.
Flexible schedule with options for different activities. Option 1: Rise early and trek towards Broad Peak Base Camp across glacial streams. This section is rough and technical due to glacier melt. After 3 hours reach Broad Peak Base Camp for lunch. Resume trek for 2 more hours through Godwin Austin Glacier to K2 Base Camp (approximately 4,998m/16,400 feet). The Gilkey Memorial is a 10-15 minute hike uphill. Return to Concordia via the same route for overnight camping. Option 2: Trek to Broad Peak Base Camp and return to Concordia on the same day. Option 3: Enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views at Concordia without additional hiking.
Return from Broad Peak Base Camp to Concordia via the same route. Trek back on Godwin Austin Glacier with the same spectacular Karakoram views. The hike is easier on the return journey. A rest day for those who chose to stay at Concordia the previous day. Trek 5-6 hours back to Concordia with views of the Karakoram mountains.
Begin journey towards Ali Camp via upper Baltoro Glacier. After crossing Mitre Peak, trekkers move onto Vigne Glacier—a crispy white glacier that is easy to walk on. Note: Small crevasses are present, so walk with guide and staff. Use crampons if there is fresh snow. Ali Camp is named after a local porter who discovered Gondogoro Pass. The trek takes approximately 5-6 hours from Concordia.
This is the critical day of the trek. Wake before dawn for an early breakfast. The pass must be crossed before sunrise due to risk of rockfall during descent as the sun warms the glacier surface. Begin trek with rescue members and support staff. Rescue personnel stationed at Gondogoro Pass assist with ropes and crossing procedures. Trek west on Vigne Glacier until Gondogoro La Base. At the base, put on harnesses and crampons, then climb slowly with support crew. It normally takes 3 hours to reach the pass summit. At dawn, enjoy views of four 8,000m peaks (K2, Broad Peak, G1, and G2) and the entire Baltoro region. The opposite side reveals Laila Peak and Gondogoro Valley. Descend carefully using fixed ropes and crampons. The trail becomes straightforward to Khuspang Camp. Camp overnight at Khuspang (4,600m) in front of Laila Peak.
Resume trek back to Saicho Camp. Walk on Gondogoro Glacier for one hour to Dalchanhpa with views of Masherbrum. Take lunch at Dalchanhpa. Resume trek through the pastures of Gondogoro Valley to Saicho Camp. Saicho has relatively better weather, allowing for washing and showering. Trek 5-6 hours today.
Return to civilization. Trek back to Hushe Valley, the last village of Ghanche District and known for its warm hospitality. Five hours of trekking brings you back to the village where you can stay overnight in tents.
Trek 3 hours to Hushe Village. Then transfer by jeep from Hushe back to Skardu city. Return to hotel accommodation.
Fly back to Pakistan's capital city via PIA flight. Transfer to hotel upon arrival.
This day is reserved for flight cancellations. If the flight operated normally, you have a free day in Islamabad for shopping in local bazaars or visiting historical monuments. Alternative: This day can serve as a contingency for a 20-hour drive from Skardu to Islamabad via Karakoram Highway or Naran Kaghan if flights are cancelled.
This is the final day of the K2 Gondogoro La Trek. Our staff will transfer you to Islamabad International Airport for your international flight. Farewell and safe travels!
Experience one of the world's most spectacular high-altitude treks through the Karakoram Range.
Professional and experienced mountain guides with extensive knowledge of the Karakoram region ensure a safe and memorable expedition. Our commitment to excellence makes us a leading trekking company specializing in challenging high-altitude adventures.
The K2 Gondogoro La Trek is a challenging high-altitude expedition through the remote Karakoram wilderness. Proper equipment and clothing are essential for safety and comfort. Here is the recommended equipment and clothing list:
Gondogoro La (also known as Gondogoro Pass) is a high mountain pass situated at 5,585 meters elevation in the heart of the Karakoram Range, approximately 25 kilometers south of K2, the world's second-highest peak. "La" is a Balti word meaning "high mountain pass" or "col." The pass connects Vigne Glacier to Gondogoro Glacier, forming a natural link between the Baltoro region and Hushe Valley.
The pass was first discovered and crossed in 1986 by a local explorer, establishing a route connecting Concordia to Hushe Valley. Since then, thousands of trekkers and mountaineers have successfully crossed this technical pass. Gondogoro La represents the border between two major valleys of Baltistan.
The pass is a significant addition to the K2 Base Camp trek, offering trekkers an alternative descent route and an unparalleled mountaineering experience. The northeast approach from Baltoro is a longer, steeper 55-degree slope mostly covered with snow, featuring fixed ropes on technical sections. The descent features a 45-degree slope but carries greater objective hazards including potential rockfall and mudslides.
The most spectacular feature of Gondogoro La is the 360-degree panoramic view from the summit, showcasing the central Karakoram peaks with unmatched beauty and grandeur.
Upon reaching Concordia, trekkers have two options: return via the same route or cross the technical mountain pass "Gondogoro La" (5,585m) into Hushe Valley. Those choosing to cross trek through Vigne Glacier to Ali Camp, the final camp before the pass.
The pass crossing is the critical day of the expedition. Trekkers depart around midnight to cross Gondogoro La before sunrise, avoiding the rockfall danger that increases as the sun warms the slopes. This timing ensures crossing the hazardous stone-fall section while rocks remain frozen and stable.
Early morning climbers reach the summit at dawn, standing at 5,585m elevation. The 360-degree panoramic view from Gondogoro La is spectacular and unforgettable—all four 8,000m peaks (K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II) are visible, along with numerous other major peaks. To the north lies the mesmerizing view of Laila Peak (6,096m) and the Hushe Valley, creating one of the world's most breathtaking scenes.
Trekkers typically reach Khuspang Camp by 9 AM for rest and overnight stay. The circuit route continues: Skardu → Shigar Valley → Ali Camp → Gondogoro La → Hushe Valley → Skardu, creating the complete "K2 Gondogoro La Circuit."
Crossing Gondogoro La is difficult and challenging for most trekkers. The ascent starts moderate but becomes progressively steeper. The terrain is primarily snow-covered with glaciers underneath. Small crevasses may be encountered, but fixed ropes secure difficult sections.
The descent is the most challenging part of the expedition. Early season (June-July) features snow coverage, while August brings snowmelt and exposed rocky scree, making descent treacherous and slippery. Objective hazards are significant during descent due to rockfall and mudslide risks.
Most descent sections are equipped with fixed ropes for support. In summary: the ascent is steep but manageable, while the real difficulty lies in the descent with its inherent risks of rockfall, mudslides, and unstable terrain. Our experienced guides and rescue teams have a proven track record of successful ascents and safe descents, providing continuous support throughout the entire expedition.
Gondogoro La is a technical mountain pass requiring mountaineering knowledge, but formal climbing experience is not absolutely essential. What truly matters is physical fitness and mental determination.
Basic mountaineering skills are advantageous: knowing how to wear crampons, harnesses, and use jumar and ice axe significantly simplifies the crossing. Crampons and ice axe are primarily used during the ascent from the Baltoro side.
The descent requires careful use of harness and jumar support with fixed ropes. Participants must descend the 45-degree slope cautiously while clipped to fixed ropes, then continue walking to Khuspang Camp. Care must be taken not to dislodge rocks that could fall on climbers below.
Experience shows that most successful trekkers had minimal or no mountaineering background. Guides assist with gear setup and provide continuous support throughout. The essential requirements are: physical fitness to handle 9-12 hours of climbing, mental resilience to overcome challenges, and willingness to follow guide instructions. Prior mountaineering knowledge is a plus factor but not a prerequisite for successful Gondogoro La crossing.
You are well-suited for this trek if you are physically fit and have completed strenuous high-altitude treks previously. Ideal qualifications include:
Pre-trek preparation should include learning basic mountaineering techniques, practicing with trekking equipment, and building endurance through regular hiking and gym training. This is not a casual tourist trek but a serious mountaineering expedition requiring dedication and preparation.
The trek carries inherent objective risks typical of high-altitude mountaineering. The ascent involves steep terrain with crevasses requiring close proximity to staff or rescue personnel. The descent presents greater hazards including exposure to rockfall, mudslides, and slippery scree surfaces.
Safety depends significantly on proper timing, weather conditions, and adherence to guide instructions. Our teams minimize risks through extensive experience, professional protocols, rescue personnel stationed at critical points, and careful timing of passes to avoid peak danger hours. While challenges exist, proper preparation and experienced leadership significantly reduce risks.
Our team employs proven risk-mitigation strategies:
These comprehensive safety measures, combined with professional expertise and careful planning, enable successful and relatively safe passage across Gondogoro La.
Absolutely, yes! The crossing offers an unparalleled mountaineering experience in the Karakoram. The rewards far exceed the challenges:
The panoramic mountain vistas and sense of accomplishment make Gondogoro La an exceptional and worthwhile mountaineering objective.

The K2 Gondogoro La Trek is a serious expedition-style adventure requiring dedicated preparation. Success depends on fitness, mental readiness, and proper training. This is for committed hikers and mountaineers, not casual tourists.
Key Training Elements:
1. Hiking and Trekking - The most effective training method. Start with local trails at minimal distances, gradually increasing to long-distance hikes. Target hilly or high-altitude locations.
